Almost every sand therapist in his practice went through three stages of creating a collection of figures for sand therapy.
Stage I. From a blank sheet
At the initial stage, the specialist is faced with the problem of where to start. What is the minimum set of shapes needed to work in the sandbox. During this period, many therapists have anxiety that the figures will not be enough and the clients will not have anything to choose from.
In fact, the beauty of the sand therapy method is that you can work without shapes at all. Sand is a unique unstructured material on which the client's unconscious will always find a way out.
Just let the client be with the sand, and you will see how his hands begin to create his world, his reality, creating a picture of sand.
Offer the client any material at hand: pebbles, shells, bugles, beads, buttons, and this is quite enough for a full-fledged work.
And, of course, plasticine. This is a great material from which the client will independently create everything he needs.
Stage II. Drag everything into the collection
The second stage, which all sand therapists go through, is when huge quantities of figures are bought up, all toy and souvenir shops in the area are emptied. At this point, the collection grows. But often more than half of these figures lie dead on the shelves and do not end up in the sandbox. Customers just don't choose them. It was during this period that one should say STOP to oneself and think over the structure of the collection. You must understand why you are buying this or that figure and which figures will work. Of course, a lot depends on the method in which you work, as well as on who you work with. I will tell you about the structure that I have developed for myself, and which seems to me to be the most effective.
Working in a Jungian approach, I assume that the more archetypal and ambiguous a figure is, the better it will work.
Therefore, I began to collect the collection with symbolic figurative figures.
The first in my collection were chess pieces.
After that, I turned to the main archetypes and began to collect a collection of figures that symbolize these archetypes.
Self: angels, wise old man, ancient coins, crucifix, temples, keys.
God: figures of mythical gods, Animus: man, warrior, knight, phallus.
Anima: female figures, princesses, black woman.
Ego: walnut, brain, money
A person: venice mask.
Shadow: dragon, skeleton, poop
Hero: knights, warriors, superman, spider-man
Sage: old man (I have a Caucasian wise old man), netski.
Child: figurine of a child, negro
Great mother: figure of a pregnant woman, vessels and vases.
Trickster: trolls / gnomes, clown / jester
Witch: Baba Yaga, witch, hut on chicken legs
Death: figure of death with a scythe, coffin, cross, gallows
These figures are the most multi-colored and are always in great demand.
Stage III. Structuring the collection
With experience, the sand therapist can already structure his collection and highlight the main categories. I recommend building collections in the following categories:
1. People:
Family (mom, dad, grandfather, grandmother, boy, girl), people of different professions, princess and prince.
2. Animals:
Pets: dog, cat, cow, pig, horse.
Wild: wolf, fox, lion / tiger, hare, elephant.
Amphibians and reptiles: turtle, frog, snake, crocodile
Fossils: dinosaurs
Mythological: dragons, pega.
Birds: Owl, Dove, Magpie, If possible, acquire animals with young.
3. Dwellings and buildings:
Castle, hut / hut, country house, modern house or building material such as lego, mill, lighthouse
4. Transport:
Carriage, car, truck, bus, train, steamboat, plane, rocket
5. Plants:
Trees, flowers, shrubs
6. Food
Bread, vegetables, fruits
7. Tools:
Ax, hammer, scissors, needle
eight. Musical instruments
Bell, whistle, flute, violin, piano
9. Special items:
Clock, hourglass, mirror, scales of justice, handcuffs, bridge and tunnel, slipper, candles.
10. Love:
Heart, figures of the groom with the bride, "sacred marriage", rings.
11. Characters of cartoons and fairy tales:
Cheburashka, Crocodile Gena, Three little pigs, Buratino, Paw patrol
You can work with these shapes for years and with almost any client request.
At the end of the article, I want to warn her against a mistake that almost all sand therapists went through. When assembling a collection, we usually try to buy what we like and which evokes positive emotions. And then the collection turns out to be mi-shy and sugary. Take care of yourself, and if you see a figure that you think is disgusting, vulgar, tasteless, and you cannot look at it, be sure to buy it. I can assure you that it will become the pearl of your collection and will visit many trays.
And, most importantly, remember that there are no uniform approaches and, even more, there are no requirements for the required set of figures. Each sand therapist has his own unique and unique collection.
