When I was 20 years old, my childhood dream of becoming a writer ordered me to live a long time, and since creative itching is incurable, I decided to find a new dream. I tried different things: dance, theater, journalism, painting, photography, foreign languages. Hobbies changed about every month. My then boyfriend was perplexed and said: "All this, of course, is good, but this is again a turn of the steering wheel." And the head of my diploma laughed and recalled a funny poem about the pioneer Lida: "Drama circle, a circle from a photo, and I also want to sing …".

While you are young, you can look for yourself, because the wheat does not immediately throw out the stem - at first it bushes. But when the time comes to work seriously, it would be good to understand your, so to speak, key competencies, because a career is at stake. And it would be nice to build it in your favorite business. But how to find it and not change your mind in two weeks - I will share the algorithm.

  1. The most obvious symptom of a love of the profession is that you recharge while you work. It is not for nothing that many enthusiastic professionals say: your favorite job heals, even if you come to it sick. It's not just rock musicians who recharge from work - everyone who works with interest gets sick less and is calmer in life. The mechanism is simple: at the moment when we experience the emotion of interest, morphine-like substances are released into the bloodstream, and they are the best antidepressant and antistress agent for the body. Under their influence, the pressure is leveled, immunity increases, and the mood is excellent.
  2. Envy Test: Understand who you are jealous of. Yes, yes, envy is a very clear symptom that we can do that too. We usually do not envy someone whose ability we don’t have. For example, I personally like people who have deeply grasped the secrets of the human psyche, scientists, philosophers, teachers who inspire to live meaningfully and in development. At the same time, the successes of pop celebrities or the wild profits of the gods of trade are not very interesting. I choose the appropriate path, and I constantly make sure that I am moving in the right direction. Take a look around, flip through the pages of celebrities on Instagram, read biographies of people you are interested in and think about where you would like to be.
  3. Another simple life hack: imagine that a lot of money fell on you, for example, a lonely aunt left a huge inheritance, and you no longer need anything. You don't need to go to work, work for the sake of earning money too. What will you do?
  4. You can be content with gradually getting closer to what you love. For example, you are an accountant by profession and are a fan of theater, but right now you cannot become an actor or director of a theater. But are there theaters that require accountants? Wouldn't the very ability to enter the theater from the service entrance make you happier? And there you are not far from meeting the stars, because it is you who will pay them their salaries. And in the meantime, no one bothers you to gradually change your profession and attend acting or directing courses. And if there is no patience to go through all these steps, then understand what you still love more: art in yourself or yourself in art? Maybe it's not about your love for the theater, but about the fact that you just want to be in the spotlight? For this, it is not necessary to become an artist, especially since their lives are not always covered with roses, rather the opposite. If you want to go on stage, then become, for example, a leader or start teaching. Then you will get more attention (all day, so to speak, in the circus arena).
  5. "Nobel Prize Test". Imagine that as a result of many years of hard work, you have reached the top in your work. Look around and look at the path traveled. What are your feelings? Don't you think now that you once set off in this direction in vain? What has life given you with this profession, how has the daily investment of strength in it changed you internally? Do you think you missed something by dedicating yourself to her? If you have a feeling of satisfaction and inner peace, then it really is yours.

If you already understood what kind of work will make you happy, great! It remains to learn how to move to the top without falling into the clutches of procrastination and fear. This will be my next article.

Have you already found the Work of a Lifetime?
