Dipsomania and alcoholism

The specialist, at the time of the diagnosis, and the patient himself, needs to clearly differentiate two very similar conditions - dipsomania and alcoholism.

Dipsomania - This is, first of all, mania, which develops on the basis of heredity, and chronic craving for alcohol, as a rule, is the result of addiction to prolonged use of alcoholic beverages. Both of these conditions have similar symptoms and signs, but for understanding it can be added - alcoholism can develop in animals.

A chronic alcoholic is someone who drinks at the earliest opportunity, seeking to enjoy it. Dipsoman drinks only at the moment of exacerbation of the attack.

Signs of dipsomania

Symptomatic manifestations of dipsomania are very similar to psychopathological disorders of a similar series. The attack always begins with a state of moderate or severe depression, hopelessness, gloomy thoughts, often inclined towards suicide. Headaches and loss of appetite are common. Then comes the second stage - an irresistible, all-encompassing craving for alcohol.

A characteristic feature of the disorder is that the patient is fully aware of his problem. He sees in alcohol at the same time the way to get rid of the depressive state, at the same time, it is the understanding that he cannot resist drinking that further exacerbates the situation. And then a prolonged binge begins, which can last more than one week and often ends with resuscitation measures, often with a fatal outcome. The latter option is the most common in the absence of support from loved ones. If there is no one nearby who could somehow interrupt the binge, the situation may end in disastrously. It is possible to break the binge only with the help of violent measures, by placing the patient in a hospital environment, for example.

The characteristic signs that appear before an attack are a clear indicator that a dispensary is a classic mentally ill patient who requires appropriate treatment.

It is worth noting that dipsomania and alcoholism can be combined in one patient. Diagnosis in this case becomes even more difficult.

Dipsomania therapy

The treatment for the disorder is as distinctive as the disease itself. Since the cause of the pathology is hidden deep in the depths of the gray matter and the patient's consciousness, it is not possible to determine it today, however, as well as the cause of many diseases of the human soul. Such conditions allow only symptomatic treatment to be carried out, and then, at the moments of the attack itself.

In the intervals between exacerbations, no intervention is required. A person leads an ordinary, full-fledged life, is engaged in work, family, in general, does not show any signs of anxiety.

Dipsomaniacs usually know and understand when another attack dawns in front of them. It is advisable that they tell about it in advance. In this case, therapy with light antidepressants is possible, which will allow to somewhat stop the severity of perception of the surrounding reality and not bring it to the beginning of a binge. If a binge does occur, the first thing to do is to interrupt it. As already noted, in this case, only violent interruption is effective. Usually a person is simply put in a hospital. At home, it is almost impossible to achieve a result - the patient will sooner or later find an opportunity to get drunk, and will go to this in all possible ways. Among experts, there is an opinion that it is possible to fight dipsomania by reducing the dosage of alcohol. However, this approach has hardly found practical application. Such an event makes the patient suffer even more.

As a result, it should be emphasized that dipsomania is an incurable condition. There is no radical cure for the disorder.
