Postmodernity offers us the idea of self-creation, the idea of unlimited choice, the idea of freedom in the creation of identity. The market picks up: "choose the same"! It is enough to buy that car, that eco product, that prosthesis, that smartphone application, that educational course, to finally become who you are, to become yourself, and you can also go to that coach to be sure …

But what does it mean to become yourself, and why does this need suddenly arise? Such a call is possible only where there is an assumption about the truth hidden within oneself. Hidden from others, but above all from himself. That somewhere behind the layers of husk there is the core of the real self, because the pearl is hiding in an ordinary shell. From the point of view of psychoanalysis, there is undoubtedly logic in this view. But the very final project of discovering this truth and assimilating it to it looks like a utopia, like an impossible, extrahuman project.

The mental dimension of a person is woven from conflicts between various instances of the mental apparatus. What we habitually call our I is created through a series of identifications with others, through the alienation of ourselves in the image and in the word. And the closest thing to the truth is the unconscious, only it can talk about desire.

Referring to this idea of a decentralized subject, the requirement “be who you are” is an impossible requirement.

For a neurotic, following it is like plunging into an endless dream, into the cycle of the psychopathology of everyday life - slips of the tongue, stonecrops, erroneous actions, into a never-ending symptom.

Submitting the pervert to this requirement will entail final fossilization as an object of pleasure for the Other.

Perhaps, "to be as he is" is available only to the psychotic, but they will try to cure him, at least with Prozac, from such insolence.

In fact, the postmodern illusion of self-creation is incompatible with the project of "becoming oneself", because it posits the ultimate truth in the future, while your hidden truth is in your history, in the history that defined you as a subject and determined your way of being in a world inhabited by other people.
