I work in the psychoanalytic direction, therefore, to begin with, I will briefly describe what psychoanalysis is and what psychodynamic psychotherapy is. Psychoanalysis is not only a psychological theory developed by Z. Freud, but also a method of research and treatment of the psyche. The main tasks of psychoanalysis: study of the psyche and the unconscious of the patient; overcoming unconscious conflicts by gaining new experience in therapy. For classical psychoanalysis, not the main cure of a person is, the main study of the psyche, the expansion of knowledge about it, both for the patient himself and for the psychoanalyst.
Recently, more talk is not about psychoanalysis as a method of treatment, but psychodynamic therapy. It is already aimed at permanent changes in a person's life, and research only serves this purpose.
In psychodynamic psychotherapy, the focus is on how a person's past experience affects his current life, what conflicts of the past are so vivid that they make a person repeat them again and again in his life. And the person himself often does not realize this. For many, this is a surprising revelation.
Our attitude to what is happening, our feelings, demeanors, our actions are dictated by our past experience. We are so arranged that everything that happens to us leaves its mark on our future. Those people who are able to flexibly perceive what is happening and adequately adapt to it have fewer problems than those who find it difficult to do it.
Psychotherapy itself is aimed at remembering past traumatic events, free recounting them and those feelings that were then and are now. The main thing is to rework the experience that was and get a new one, to find new ways of interacting with others on the example of relations with a psychotherapist. Everything in the work is subordinate to: relieve the patient of the symptom, alleviate suffering, reduce morbidity and mortality. Although this is not always clearly present in the course of therapy.
Often in the process, difficult moments arise when it is difficult and painful for the patient to face his feelings, it is difficult to remember something, to painfully realize and recognize some facts. At such moments, the analyst does not always strive to instantly relieve the patient of the patient's suffering. recycling painful material may be the keys to recovery. In general, the analyst does not have the task of satisfying all the patient's desires, be it a quick release from suffering, excessive compassion and consolation, or resorting to physical gratification. But everything is very individual! If the therapist feels and sees the need for some action that is not directly related to the therapy process, he can do it. The main rule is not to harm. If something does more good than harm, then why not?
In conclusion, I can say that psychodynamic psychotherapy, more than classical psychoanalysis, is focused on what is happening here and now. Therefore, one should expect not only a complete excursion into one's past, but also active work with current events taking place. It should be understood that everything is important. Both the past and the present.
