Why Are We Sick?
Why Are We Sick?

Socrates once said: "You cannot heal the body without healing the soul."

Following him, his students and philosophers adhered to this opinion.

Giselle Arrou-Revidi also believed: - "It is pain that makes the connection between body and soul."

These thoughts have come down to the present, though sometimes in a distorted version.

In this article, I want to explain a little how Gestalt therapy and body-oriented psychotherapy now look at a disease and a symptom.

Where the body and I are seen as a single whole mechanism.

In the present, there are more and more diseases or symptoms that cannot be treated with the help of doctors or medication. And more and more often we hear the expression - this psychosomatics.

This information flows to the right and to the left, but to what extent is it helpful and applicable in life? It is difficult to take advantage of this fashionable, vague definition.

Having studied myself for a dozen years, and from the professional side - body-oriented psychotherapy, I began to understand how organized and confidently assert that the connection between the body and the psyche is inseparable.

Many have an understanding of the body, it is more common now as a separate object … As something that belongs to me, but is not me. And I am not responsible for his processes and kind. It's just a mechanism that works right. I feed it, wash it, rub it with cream so that it continues to perform its functions. Show me attractive in the world. Be sexually flexible. It was healthy and served me for a long time. Protected me from unnecessary contacts. It. It even sounds aloof.

The global development of medicine and the pharmaceutical business, the growth of photoshopped glossy photos and the international psychosis of the sports industry further enhance object gaze and attitude to your body.

Then the body and appearance becomes an object of manipulation, where a person transfers responsibility for him and for his health to specialists. Sports trainers, nutritionists, doctors, cosmetologists, etc.

No, don’t you think, I’m not against all this. This is an add-on if you use it correctly. It is external. But this should not be the basis in a relationship with yourself and your body.

With the help of training and fashionable operations, I can get the best and ideal (though who determines this criterion) body.

But it will no longer be mine … And that object over which I carry out manipulations in order to correspond to something or someone.

I can make myself the most beautiful facial features if I lie under the knife. And it won't be me anymore.

It will be such an external transformation of oneself, adjusted to social fashionable standards. But then who am I? You still need to learn how to live and deal with this new thing.

A person falls ill and immediately runs to the doctor, giving him responsibility for his health. Like, do whatever is necessary to keep me healthy. And the healing process is the treatment of the apex, not the cause itself. And treatments can also be manipulative on the part of doctors.

Having done all this, it is not yet a fact that I will become happier and healthier.

After such reflections, I still want to focus more attention and consider the idea of the inseparability of body and soul.

I am my body … The body is me and the way I look, how I feel - this reflects me and my inner state.

The body as I am by itself cannot get sick. For some reason I am hurting myself. I make myself more massive and heavier. This I make myself easier.

The body is a reflection and projection of my soul and consciousness

Illness or symptom is my form of difficulty and problem. A symptom is an opportunity to tell me that some of my needs are not being met. Or some emotion of mine is "stuck" and gives tension.

That is, if I have a desire - most often unconscious - and I cannot satisfy it now in my life, then I get sick. And my illness helps me to satisfy this need.

Yes, it sounds crazy. I want something, I cannot get it in accessible ways, then I invent for myself a symptom that serves my true desire.

We are accustomed to treating an illness or symptom as something that terribly interferes with, we do not need, I want to get rid of it. But in fact, the same symptom helps you!This is the only way to get around and adapt to your desires.

While this may be difficult for you to understand, I will give illustrative examples later.

There is now an official list of psychosomatic illnesses in which doctors cannot find a single cause of pain. And it is replenished.

These include:

  • bronchial asthma, choking;
  • hypertension, problems with blood pressure;
  • anxiety disorders to the level of panic;
  • angina and heart problems;
  • duodenal ulcer;
  • ulcerative colitis and all types of ulcers;
  • neurodermatitis, skin problems;
  • polyarthritis, joint diseases.

The list is impressive and - if you are careful - applies to all important organs.

In addition to the need, which we realize so perversely, there is also a stopped process behind the symptom - emotions that are held and projected onto the body. Some organ.

To get started with this you need to understand a little:

  • be aware of sensations in the body. If there is no definite symptom, there may be severe fatigue. I don't want to go to work, etc.
  • What emotions and feelings does this state cause in me? How am I in this state? How do I perceive myself?
  • Where are these feelings and emotions displayed in the body?
  • if these are feelings that have been withheld towards someone or in a situation, try to remember. What was there that you chose not to say or not to do?
  • try to manifest it outside. The ways can be different and creative. Through body movements, through words, dialogue, writing. But, of course, it is better to involve bodily processes.

    Man is a self-regulating organism. Does not give birth to himself anything that is not useful to him. Therefore, it is worth considering the disease as something that helps and is beneficial. Through this method, one can realize that the psyche blocks needs in primitive ways.

If I have a sudden headache, but it rarely hurts. I can refer to fatigue, information overload, changing weather, and Mercury retrograde. It is an object relationship and a transfer of responsibility. The next step is to go take a pill.

If I try to accept the fact that I am organizing pain for myself. What for?

Answering this question, I can remember that in the morning - talking to my husband - I did not tell him what I didn’t like. I held back my anger. And the anger was displayed as a symptom.

Or, when I have a headache, I experience myself as unable to think, be focused and productive. I'm out of focus. I begin to press and massage my temples in a circular motion. Why am I doing this? That there was no tension.

That is, I can also interpret this situation like this: - I cannot always afford to be relaxed and not run headlong in order to do everything. And when I have a headache, it is “legal” to allow myself to stop. With the help of a symptom, I satisfy my need, which I ignore.

This example is about illness as a way to satisfy needs.

It is important to recognize:

- I am my symptom. I am my head, this is my head and I have no other. Why such an accent? When a person has a pain, he wants to split off this part from himself. And then he will not be able to do anything with what does not belong to him. Must return ownership.

- How does the confession sound? I react with chest pain to what is happening in my life. I squeeze my throat. I twist my joints. Etc.

- it is important to take responsibility for myself and what I am doing with myself.

If a person is not ready to acknowledge his symptom in this way and does nothing with it, then this symptom serves many of his needs.

- Further it is necessary to understand and investigate what needs the symptom serves. How does it help me to live? What are my benefits from this state?

- Then it is already possible to search for a direct way to satisfy these needs. How else can I get what I want in life.

I'll tell you - this is not an easy way.

I agree that not always and not all symptoms need to be "treated" and investigated in this way. Sometimes it is important to do this in conjunction with a psychotherapist and doctors.

But the primary symptoms, if you are attentive to yourself, are always easier to track down and start working with them.

Right now, for example, I am writing this text with temperature. At the same time, I live on an island, +35. Recently, with a minimum amount of communication with real people. In principle, I am not sick. And it was impossible to get infected.

According to the above tips, I walked through and admitted to myself: -

I hurt myself because I'm tired. Now I am the kind that demands little of myself and is relaxed. I just let myself lie. And this in my life I rarely allow myself. Therefore, I organized this symptom to satisfy the need for relaxation. I will look for ways to satisfy my desires so as not to get sick. And I wish you the same.
