She lay on the bed and looked into the corner. There was a lantern near the window and flooded the whole room with its light, except for that eerie dark corner.

And there, in the dark, sat the Scarecrow. So the girl called him to herself.

IT sat and looked at her, and she, numb in her bed, tried to find a way out of this situation - And if you slip by and run to your grandmother? What will grandma say? As usual, she will grumble that I am not sleeping and I cannot tell her about the Scarecrow again. Or maybe I, thought the girl, will pretend that I do not see him and will sleep on his evil, turn now on the other side and go to sleep. But the numbness that held the girl's body did not even allow him to walk. And the girl, taking a short breath, closed her eyes.

“I don’t see him, I don’t see him,” she whispered to herself, already falling asleep.

In the morning, the girl, passing the corner, cautiously squinted there, the Scarecrow was asleep, the girl sighed more calmly, but she was still scared, what if IT wasn’t sleeping, but pretending, and when I walk by, it would grab me …

But during the day the Scarecrow was fast asleep, his time came at night …

In fact, the Scarecrow really wanted to eat this girl, she had some amazing willpower, with all her fear, the girl did not let him close to her. How she did it, the Scarecrow did not understand and cherished the hope that the girl would relax and allow him to take possession of her. Oh, what a tidbit it would be…. In the meantime, we have to wait … The child cannot hold on for so long, after all, she is only 6 years old …

In the evening the girl made an attempt: “Grandma, I don’t want to sleep in my room myself, I’m scared there,” said the girl. Grandmother looked menacingly over her glasses and walked in front of the girl into her room, turned on the light and turned to her granddaughter.

- And what's so terrible? What are you making up again? Have you seen someone again? “No,” the girl replied, glancing sideways at the corner where the Scarecrow sat and grinned.

Your grandmother does not see me and will not be able to help you, - a hissing voice sounded right in the girl's head. - It can't be? Can I hear him ?!

- Grandmother!

- What? - the grandmother stopped at the door.

- I want to learn to read!

- Why would it suddenly? In my opinion, someone a couple of hours ago did not even want to hear about it?

- And now I want! Very! - the girl almost screamed.

- Calm down, - the grandmother's face softened. She went to her granddaughter, she looked at her with full eyes of tears, - Calm down - said the grandmother even softer, - Tomorrow I'll start teaching you, and now go to bed, and I'll sit with you and read to you.

The girl fell asleep, listening to her grandmother's voice and holding her hand tightly with her hand, and already half asleep was thinking about how she spent the Scarecrow today. And tomorrow…. For tomorrow she had a plan ready….

Tomorrow was a day off. And from the very morning the girl proudly walked past the sleeping gloomy Scarecrow to her grandmother, holding the Primer in her hands.

Grandmother looked at her granddaughter in surprise:

- Oh, are you serious?

“Yes,” the granddaughter answered defiantly.

Two hours later, the tired grandmother said that enough for today.

"No no! - the girl cried out, - I have to learn everything today!"

Grandmother looked at her granddaughter in surprise.

“Okay,” Grandma said, sitting down, “I don’t understand why there’s such an urgency, but I believe you will learn all the letters very quickly and you’ll soon learn to read, but in one day I don’t know how to teach you everything you want.”

The girl looked closely at her grandmother, in her heart she understood that she was telling the truth, sighed - okay, I'll wait a little longer - then can I go to the yard? - and having received an affirmative answer, she ran skipping to get dressed.

The Scarecrow sat and rubbed its hands, IT was waiting for the Girl. Today or never, the Scarecrow decided. Ugh, what nonsense, which means NEVER, it will be TODAY. Stop playing hide-and-seek, I want to eat, the Scarecrow thought, and here is what IS.

The scarecrow watched as the old woman put the girl to bed, then turned off the light and left. Here it is a long-awaited moment, now, now…. But what is it? !

The girl sat on the bed and turned on the night light, in her hands she was holding a book.

- Aa, Bae, Ve …

The scarecrow shook his head: Hey, I'm here! What are you? !! Look at me! Hey!!!

Ge, Te, Ee, - not paying any attention to the screams of the Scarecrow, in a quiet but firm voice, the Girl pronounced the letters.

It can't be! She can't help but see me! She cannot but hear me … - the Scarecrow whispered in confusion.

CAN! - suddenly heard IT.

There is a world where you live, and there is another world - interesting and full of adventures. And even if I only learn letters, but soon I will surf with the pirates of the sea and try on dresses with princesses, fight dragons and the same monsters like you and defeat them, and then dance at balls.

And today - I was able to defeat YOU!

The girl closed the book, turned off the light, turned on her side and closed her eyes …

Merry letters, circling in a dance, guarded the girl's sleep.
