The third type of neurotic personality, described by Karen Horney in her theory of neuroses, has an attitude of "movement from people" and a tendency to isolate.
Symptom of neurotic isolation - this is unbearable anxiety and tension from communicating with people.
The desire for meaningful loneliness is not neurotic isolation. On the contrary, the neurotic avoids deep immersion in himself. It is the inability to constructive solitude that is the hallmark of neurosis.
What is characteristic of an isolated personality type?
1. Seeing yourself as an object is detached.
2. Establish emotional distance between themselves and others - they try not to get involved in emotional connection with others (love, struggle, cooperation, competition).
3. Suppression and denial of feelings - proceeds from the need for distance from others.
4. The more the emotions are contained, the more the emphasis is placed on the intellectual sphere.
5. Huge need for "self-sufficiency" - can reduce their needs to be less dependent on others.
6. Need for privacy.
7. They do not like to share their experiences - too personal questions shock them.
8. Partnership relations are easier for them to build with the same isolated personalities, tk. they recognize their need for distance. And if the emotional distance is provided, then they can be in a relationship for a long time.
Basic need: the need for complete independence.
From this need follows the need for self-sufficiency and solitude. Thanks to this, they maintain their integrity.
Deception: look at their independence as the ultimate goal. They ignore the fact that it is important how they use this independence.
The isolated neurotic tries to avoid all situations where he feels obligated, embarrassed, compelled. They are too sensitive to anything that looks like pressure and coercion. They do not tolerate long-term obligations: contract, agreement, marriage, schedule, accepted rules of conduct. May agree externally, but internally reject all rules and standards. Advice from the outside provokes resistance even if it coincides with the desires of the neurotic.
A huge need to be a meaningful and important person. If this feeling is lost, he can come out of his inner hiding place and rush to seek love and protection. And then, he can be confused with a subordinate neurotic type. In therapy, the focus is first on the development of inner strength and self-confidence, which leads the neurotic to a feeling and awareness of his independence from others. And it may seem that a regression has begun. But only at this point can you begin to work on its isolation. Internal stability provides the resolution of internal conflicts, the awareness of which the detached person avoids.
If the therapist immediately wants to make the client sociable - for the client it is worse than contempt.
When setting movement from people, the neurotic tries to achieve inner integrity and tranquility. If an isolated person comes into close contact with other people, it can be torn apart and she can get a nervous breakdown (alcoholism, depression, suicide, inability to work, insanity).
The reasons for a nervous breakdown can be the betrayal of the husband, the neuroticism of the wife, humiliation in the army, unpopularity in the team, the inability to earn a living, if before that she was comfortable.
Separate neurotics can have a rich emotional and intellectual life, but do not make any effort to manifest it outside. And wonder why people do not see their talents and abilities. They believe that their inner potentials are already wealth, without the need to manifest them. Therefore, by the end of their lives, they often experience disappointment from unfulfilled and missed opportunities.
This is due to the fact that it is easier for them to avoid the demands of life than to come into contact with it. After all, contact for such a person is a threat to his integrity. In difficult situations, such a person can neither fight, nor calm down, nor cooperate, nor set conditions, nor love, nor be tough. She is defenseless, so she runs away and hides.
If neurotic isolation progresses, it becomes more and more difficult for such a person to solve life problems and he becomes helpless in front of life.

Neurosis is a very confusing thing. There are different views on the nature, causes and development of this problem. I want to focus on Karen Horney's research, which I consider to be one of the deepest and most ambitious in this area. Speaking about neurosis, Karen Horney distinguishes three types of neurotic personality:
