This post is not about those who build pipe dreams. Rather, about those who go into their inner world in moments of strong feelings or discomfort in life. Most often this occurs in childhood, but a huge number of adults resort to defensive fantasy in one way or another.

This fantasy is one of the psychological defenses, a special case of primitive isolation. If fantasizing is normal - children's psychological protection, then in adulthood it is an indicator of maladjustment and imbalance of the adaptive mechanisms of the psyche, which often interferes with fully living a stressful situation and getting out of it with a solution. Instead, the personality is transferred to an imaginary "convenient", comfortable world, and the problem remains unsolved.

The world in which a person lives in moments of difficulties does not need a distortion of reality, which nevertheless does not guarantee dysphoria upon returning from dreams. A person who uses primitive isolation for protection can give the impression of being immersed in himself and not responding to external influences.

An important negative consequence of the application of this protection is problems in social contacts. The personality is self-excluded from contacts for the sake of maintaining inner peace.

In this situation, it is important for a person to realize that the moments of application of protection are a wasted, non-renewable time of life and to use it in favor of more adaptive psychological defenses.

Modeling all the outcomes of a situation will be a good help for individuals prone to primitive isolation. Asking yourself mentally questions:

"What happens if I do this?"

"What if I do something differently?"

"What will not happen if I do this?"

"What won't happen if I do something differently?"

When modeling all outcomes, it is better to start with potentially negative ones, continue with neutral ones and end with a positive solution to the problem situation. At the moment of productive thinking, instead of protective fantasizing, due to the specifics of imagination, a dreamy person most often finds a solution and directs all resources for its implementation.

Having dealt with exciting situations in this way several times, a person consolidates a new response model, which increases resistance to stressful events and allows a constructive response to reality, without resorting to primitive isolation.
