The term is used to describe the promiscuous sexual relations of an individual. Promiscuity is found among both men and women of all sexual orientations. Sometimes promiscuity is generated by a pathologically high libido, but it should not be confused with manifestations of hypersexuality (nymphomania, satiriasis).

For DSM-5 personality disorders, the frequency of occurrence of promiscuity is considered and is most often presented in cluster B (Oscillating disorders). To a lesser extent, it is inherent in cluster C (Anxiety disorders of personality).

Below I want to describe the characteristics, to a greater extent revealed in individuals with one or another PD (personality disorder) and the reasons for promiscuity. So:

Cluster B (Oscillating RL)

Antisocial RL. Characterized by impulsiveness and disregard for social norms, as well as an inability to form attachments. Due to the weakness of cortical processes in such individuals, control over drives and impulses is completely or maximally lost. Promiscuity in the structure of antisocial personality disorder is the result of a lack of control over one's desires.

Border RL. Individuals with a high level of neurotization, the presence of affective instability is expressed in an extremely strong emotional response to stressful events, followed by stabilization in this state for a long time. Impulsive behavior is often a response to emotional pain. Promiscuity in the structure of BPD is the fight against the fear of being worthless and the feeling of emptiness.

Hysterical RL. The main characteristics are: emotional lability, the desire to be in the center of attention, preoccupation with physical attractiveness, over-emotionality, a constant need to be recognized by others. Because of the external locus of control, the personality uses promiscuity to compensate for the intimate sphere and increase self-esteem.

Narcissistic RL. It is characterized by a conviction in superiority over other people, a search for the admiration of others to confirm their uniqueness, an inflated opinion about their talents, a desire to control the opinion of others about themselves. Personalities are characterized by a low level of empathy and a superficial attitude towards others. Promiscuity in the structure of narcissistic RL acts as a means of power over others and confirmation of one's own significance.

Cluster C (Alarming RL)

Obsessive-compulsive PD. Characterized by perfectionism, scrupulousness, susceptibility to obsessions and associated compulsions. In cases where sexual fantasies acquire the properties of obsessions, compulsive behavior is expressed by promiscuity.

Separately, it is worth noting personality changes according to the type of labile and disinhibited. In both cases, such people have weakened control over their own motives, a low threshold for the discharge of aggression and plasticity of the emotional sphere. This contributes to the adoption of less balanced decisions, since the personality is subject to outbursts of emotions and often ignores social norms accepted in society.
