To begin with, it is logical to define the terminology.
Temperament is a complex of individual personality traits that determine the dynamics of her behavior and mental activity.
There are several temperament tests. The most famous of these are the Eysenck scales:
- Extraversion-introversion
- Stability of the nervous system
Where
- Introverts (people oriented inside their emotions and feelings) are phlegmatic and melancholic.
- Extroverts (people for whom external manifestations are important) - choleric and sanguine.
- Emotionally resilient, as a rule, phlegmatic and sanguine people.
- And melancholic and choleric people are considered more prone to depression and neurosis.
Of course, there are no pure types of temperament in nature, but there are only leading ones.
The easiest way to determine your leading type of temperament, in my opinion, was the surprisingly accurate illustrations by the German-Danish artist Herluf Bidstrup (1912-1988).
Look!
Imagine that you are sitting on a bench in the park, and a stranger, sitting next to you, accidentally crushes your hat or baseball cap, well, in general, a hat. Although in its place there may be a cake or some other fragile object.
Your reaction:
- Screaming at an awkward stranger? (choleric)
- Crying or getting very upset? (melancholic)
- Laugh out loud? (sanguine)
- Calmly explain to a stranger that he did wrong? (phlegmatic person)
If you answer the question glorified in the title of the article, there are no ambiguous opinions here!
Some researchers believe that a person's temperament can only be innate and unchanged. Others claim that our temperament is almost as flexible as our psyche.
I tend to adhere to the second opinion, because I felt the situation with a change in the type of temperament on myself and on some people whom I have known for several decades.
- Some have become calmer, while others, on the contrary.
- Someone has opened up more, and someone, on the contrary, has withdrawn into himself.
I myself, by no means, was not lucky to be born with a happy character, I gradually adjusted it to my desires!
As a child, I was choleric and reacted very violently to everything. The line from sadness to joy was very thin, which caused a lot of trouble, both to others and to myself. And when I started to study psychology in the second university, somehow gradually, my psyche became more stable and, according to Eysenck, my indicators became closer to sanguine.
For which I am very grateful to my profession, which helped to keep the psyche intact, given many life circumstances.
In conclusion, I would like to say that it is, of course, difficult to greatly change your character (and it largely depends on temperament), but each of us can slightly correct it!
