It is hard to endure the constant boring feeling of extreme fatigue and the oppression of incessant worries, a feeling of hopelessness, despair and falling into the trap of endless loneliness.

Unfortunately, many people in the fight against depression make their situation much more difficult … by using defense mechanisms that actually work against them and lead to more suffering.

How do we deal with the pain in our souls?

Man is adaptive by nature. Each of us, to one degree or another, has the ability to endure pain, to fight it. Even a hungry baby, even through screaming and crying, can "wait" for the moment when the mother is ready to feed him. This is an innate ability, our nature. A person must adapt and survive, not only physically but also emotionally.

Just as a plant forms itself in its environment, which sometimes has to rotate the stem, leaves and bud to get the sunlight and the nutrients it needs, people also change their sense of reality in order to protect themselves and get what they need. what they need (love, security, belonging, etc.).

Unfortunately, many of the adaptations that are designed to serve people can become burdensome and destructive to themselves. These mechanisms can include isolation, overeating, overuse of video games, and obsessive thinking.

Depression is difficult to manage, and it can be difficult to cope with it on your own. Especially if you grew up in an environment where she was “constantly in the air”. Then you simply cannot do something to protect yourself from loneliness and "infection" with depression itself.

Perhaps you unwittingly had to turn on a more serious defensive reaction, different from the standard mechanisms, those that could once save your life. Now they only cause you additional suffering. I think this can be expressed in low self-esteem, self-deprecation, persistent and strong doubts, … obsessive thoughts. These mechanisms and depressive thoughts, which, at one time, may have been protective, now lead to self-destruction.

Ask yourself a series of small questions:

What are the negative thoughts I think about most often?

What happens when my mind is filled with negative thoughts?

Are these negative thoughts part of me?

What functions do these negative thoughts perform for my consciousness?

Are these negative thoughts here to protect me?

What alternative ways are there to help me with my depression?

If negative thoughts are really a problem-solving mechanism, then it is better to get help from someone who knows how to work with the subtleties of the unconscious and the vulnerabilities that manifest themselves in these defenses. A skilled and empathetic therapist can be invaluable because a professional can reflect the impact of these thoughts and offer a space in which you can begin to feel the real feelings behind these thoughts. It seems to me that this is a great way to see your inner world more clearly and more voluminously, and, ultimately, learn to work with depression in a more dynamic way.
