A lot of materials have been written about what stress is, but I would venture to suggest refreshing and structuring your knowledge a little:)

So, stress is a mental and / or physical condition that occurs when it is necessary to adapt to the environment or changes that have occurred in it. The response to stress is, in fact, the excitement of the autonomic nervous system, manifested, in particular, by an increased heart rate, increased pressure, shortness of breath, muscle tension, etc.

More often than not, we use this word in a negative way, although in fact stress can also be positive (the so-called eustress or eustress). It tones the body, directs its forces. Ever-stress can be both as a result of positive emotions and as a result of a positive resolution of a situation (for example, you had a difficult and urgent task, but you coped with it successfully). Negative stress is called distress, but for the sake of simplicity, in what follows, I will use the usual "stress"

Short stress most often does not do much harm to a person. Exposure to prolonged stress can manifest itself in the form of symptoms and behaviors, which we will discuss below …

Stress and its consequences

Short stress most often does not do much harm to a person. Exposure to prolonged stress can manifest itself in the following symptoms and behaviors:

  • apathy
  • irritability
  • feeling tired
  • evasion of responsibility
  • avoidance of communication
  • destructive and / or self-destructive behavior
  • deterioration of cognitive functions - attention, memory, thinking
  • increased anxiety
  • decreased immunity, physical ailments

When is the risk of negative effects of stress high? Studies have shown that the likelihood of negative health effects increases if exposure

  • very intense - threat to life, injury, loss of loved ones
  • repeats regularly - even not very strong stress effects with regular repetition can be very dangerous
  • unpredictable - for example, the stress level will be higher with an unexpected call to the manager than with the expected discussion of a bad report
  • uncontrollable and associated with pressure (psychological pressure) - studies have shown that people who at least partially choose the schedule for the task themselves, the symptoms are less pronounced

From practice, I can say that the main sources of stress are work and family.

It is very important to understand that people have different levels of stress tolerance. This can be due to many reasons - from the type of the nervous system to traumatic events in the past. Therefore, the same event can affect different people in a completely different way.
