Will patience and work grind everything? Including the laborer, joy and love of life.

"When is it the weekend?" "Oh, the holidays are in two weeks.", "There are two months left until the vacation."

Let's talk about burnout.

How does professional burnout begin? Two groups of people are most susceptible to this ailment:

1) Shy, modest, conflict-avoidant workers, accustomed to conceal their experiences and emotions. They burn out due to the inability to even have a minimal effect on the working conditions, for example, to ask for a higher salary or to agree on a standardized work schedule with their superiors.

The fear of defending their boundaries in working relationships leads to the fact that this type of people imperceptibly fades away and one day simply disappears with no one saying goodbye.

2) Workaholic achiever: rocket man. He bursts into the working environment and at first pleases his superiors. Work for him is a drug and soon the hyperviolence of this person begins to be taken for granted.

But after a couple of months - half a year, he notices a catch from his body, which in every possible way signals to him that “you are not a robot”.

What do these two groups of people have in common? This broken feeling "I'm tired, it's time for me to rest." The brain tries to overcome the impulses of the body and tells it: work, you can do better … Or: Well, how are you going to leave this job, they won't take you anywhere, sit and do not twitch.

It should be emphasized that our body is at times smarter than the brain. And if the first denies that it’s time for you to have a rest, the body cannot be deceived.

About stages and about treatment:

Stage 1 - it is called the honeymoon. A person with enthusiasm is ready to carry out any orders of the authorities, since the work brings great pleasure.

"Pound quarry: 2 people - me !, Cement plant - me !, Loading coal - me!" Overtime - please, business trips every week - no question. Double load - always dreamed of. Here, as a rule, the whole tragedy of what is happening is not noticeable to the “burning” person himself or to those around him.

No one thinks about treatment at this stage, since they do not perceive it as a pathology.

Stage 2 - apathy, irritability arise, and bodily manifestations are connected. Frequent colds, headaches, skin rashes, gastrointestinal disorders.

Treatment: good rest, revision of the work schedule, discussion of additional motivation with the authorities.

I want to note that rest is not a change of activity, but its complete absence. You should feel the “unbearable lightness of being” and completely reboot to the point where you need to remember the name of your profession and responsibilities in the workplace.

Stage 3 - aggression, indifference and antipathy towards people are added here, especially if the profession is related to human interaction. All enthusiasm disappears, the work is performed mechanically and without putting any extra effort into it.

The organs that take the most active part in the working process begin to get sick: the seller's voice may lose, the programmer's eyesight will deteriorate, the masseur's hands will start to go numb and refuse.

Treatment: 2-3 weeks of rest, vacation, revising the work schedule and working conditions, changing the company, possibly moving to another position, discussing with the management the possibility of increasing motivation.

Stage 4 - complete depletion of physical and moral resources. Life-threatening diseases are possible. Deep depression, hatred of others.

Treatment: long vacation, change of field of activity.

Often a work-addicted person realizes that he is hurting himself only when others give him feedback: “Hey kid, take it easy. Shouldn't you go on vacation?"

Or when the body “signals” its cold and inability to work harder at this pace.

Why is that? Because work can also take the form of dependence, but in our society, working a lot is cool. First, you see how parents leave early in the morning, and half-dead come back from work in the evening, and then modern culture and the pace of life dictate its own rules.

Test

I propose to pass a basic test in order to assess whether you have a penchant for workaholism:

For the proposed wording, choose one of 5 answer options

(1) = never, (2) = rarely, (3) = sometimes, (4) = often, and (5) = always.

1) You are looking for options and ways: how to free up more time for work.

2) You spend more time on work than you originally planned

3) Work helps you reduce feelings of guilt, anxiety, helplessness, and depression.

4) Others advise you to reduce the amount of time at work, but you do not listen to them.

5) If you DO NOT work, for reasons beyond your control, it is stress

6) You give up hobbies, leisure and exercise because of your work.

7) You work so hard that it negatively affects your health.

If you answer “often” or “always” to at least four of the seven items, it may indicate that you are a workaholic.

Don't be afraid to change your life and be more attentive to your health:)
