In the second part of the article on professional ethics, I would like to focus on the professional competence of a psychoanalyst (or psychoanalytically oriented therapist), since this is probably one of the most important points for a specialist in his work.

As a psychoanalyst, psychoanalytically oriented therapist, psychoanalytically oriented psychologist, only a specialist who has received a special psychological education works. It must be confirmed by a state diploma or a certificate of professional training. There are no state universities for training psychoanalysts in Russia. Only private educational institutions train psychoanalytically oriented specialists.

The psychoanalyst bears personal responsibility for his work, carries out it only within his competence.

If a psychoanalyst finishes his practice, if he falls ill for a long time, then he can transfer the patient only to specialists whose professional competence allows him to do this!

The psychoanalyst is obliged to constantly work to improve his professional skills. This can be done by participating in schools, seminars, conventions, supervision.

It is important to note that psychoanalysts resort to psychopharmacology (the use of psychoactive drugs) only when really necessary. This can be done by a specialist who has training in this field. It is forbidden to resort to "wild" drug treatment! Without knowledge of psychopharmacology and vocational training, it is forbidden to: write prescriptions, make psychiatric diagnoses, conduct an examination of sanity, resolve the issue of involuntary hospitalization. If a psychoanalyst does not have enough knowledge, experience, professional qualifications when working with a patient, he must either consult with other specialists, or lead the patient in tandem with the necessary specialist, or transfer to a colleague who is able to provide qualified assistance.

It is highly recommended for the psychoanalyst to systematically consult with colleagues, as well as to consult the applied colleagues. This can take place both within the framework of supervision groups and in other formats.

Any specialist, before starting his career, must undergo not only personal psychoanalytic therapy, but also undergo a training analysis.

When promoting his services to individual patients and advertising his psychoanalytic groups, the psychoanalyst should not resort to false and misleading statements. This also applies to promises to help with any problem and the shortest terms. It is worth remembering that there is no universal and magic “pill”. Not all analysts can work with all patients. When confirming his professional qualifications, a psychoanalyst can use only those documents that are officially recognized by the state and professional associations. It is forbidden to provide deliberately false documents or documents that were produced by the specialist himself and not recognized by any professional association.

If you have any questions, you can ask me, and I am ready to answer them.

Mikhail Ozhirinsky - psychoanalyst, group analyst.
