Psychology studies negative states many times more than positive ones - and this is a problem.

Martin Seligman

Such a phenomenon as a feeling of helplessness is formed in our society quite often. It even has a definition - learned helplessness. This syndrome of learned helplessness often leads to depression and apathy, general pessimism, decreased immunity, to obsessive states from which a person cannot find a way out, despite the fact that the “door” is near.

The first step in getting out of this unpleasant state is to realize that it is caused by the sphere of conditioned reflexes. Anyone can be taught and reinforced helplessness. However, the opposite is also true - any person can be taught to cope with helplessness.

Let's see how in the ordinary world a person learns to be helpless and how you can start learning something else.

If you find a feeling of helplessness in yourself, remember - no matter how you learn this state, no matter what factors in your environment would affect its maintenance - there is a way out.

In a number of experiments, it was found that even if a self-confident person receives a negative assessment of others for his actions, then he begins to doubt himself and his righteousness. If an insecure person gets approval and the environment encourages him, then over time he begins to cope with tasks much better.

Based on this, we can conclude:

  1. It is necessary and useful to look for a way to develop for yourself a positive experience of coping with anything.
  2. Find and use positive support and connect with people who can provide it. Conversely, minimize communication in which you continue to receive negative support and criticism.
  3. If you live in an environment where you constantly receive a negative assessment of your activities or do not receive it at all, you need to change the environment (for example, work) or start living separately from your parents.
  4. You don’t have to completely take the blame for the results you get - it’s only depressing. Remember, guilt is not a responsibility. Responsibility means stopping doing things and stopping the way of thinking in which you lose confidence. Guilt is a burden that does not allow you to find a way out.
  5. No matter how much helpless you feel, turning to a specialist and being recognized in your condition is an excellent first positive step to get out of this situation.

To cope with something that is not, you need to acknowledge your desire to cope and begin to act in any way. By achieving success in their endeavors, each person is able to regain self-confidence.
