The problem of TV and gadgets in the upbringing of a modern child is gaining more and more relevance. They often become just a lifesaver for young parents. When a baby is naughty, refuses to eat or take medicine, it is easy to captivate him with a bright picture and an "adult" toy. Poems, sayings, grandmother's nursery rhymes are superseded by short cartoons for the little ones and games on smartphones. Increasingly, instead of reading bedtime stories, parents simply play a cartoon for their children before bed.

On the one hand, progress cannot be avoided. Our children come to this technogenic world, which becomes more complicated every year. Collision with technology is inevitable. And there are really educational apps for the little ones. To use them or not is the choice of every parent, because it is a part of modern life. Smartphones have become an integral part of our work and leisure, the main intermediary in communication. And children absorb this lifestyle from birth.

However, it is important to observe the measure. It's so easy to miss the moment when gadgets become the dominant theme in parent-child communication. How easy it is to "turn off" a child by including another cartoon or dismiss his constant "why" by handing over a tablet. The child is completely absorbed in the change of bright pictures and funny sounds. It becomes convenient and the parents go about their business. This is a great temptation. But in such a scenario, the contact between the child and the parent loses energy and is quickly depleted. There is a risk of completely losing contact with the child.

Of course, young children are less assiduous, they need a frequent change of activity. Therefore, they are more likely to prefer playing with mom or dad. But children after 3 years old can watch cartoons for hours, completely falling out of reality. Moreover, turning off the TV can become a reason for child's tantrums. This is a real test for the baby. The dearest and closest person suddenly selects the brightest and most interesting toy. This is perceived as a betrayal. There is resentment, disappointment, anger, a feeling of injustice, real grief - how can a child survive all this? Children will demand the restoration of "justice" by all means available to them.

Sometimes permission to watch TV can be the embodiment of parental authority over a child. When the authority weakens, and the child goes through a crisis, the parents lose control and the idea of manipulation and blackmail may be born. “Follow my requirements and watch the cartoon”, “Are you disobeying? You will be left without a cartoon "," If you behave well, you will play on the tablet "… There are many options and in practice we meet in relation to children of different ages.

However, this parenting strategy can turn against the parents themselves. Children quickly grasp the essence of manipulation and engage in reciprocal play. They try their hand and are very creative in their pursuits. In the future, you will receive a skillful manipulator that cannot be beaten.

But we ourselves create the problem. Naturally, if TV is a part of the daily life of adults, then the child will learn this way of life. Children will definitely be more influenced by TV, they grow up and actively explore the world, quickly absorbing and appropriating everything that surrounds them. There is practically no criticism of the incoming information, it is formed at about the age of 9-11. Therefore, it is important to keep track of the content and amount of TV viewing. It will not be superfluous to also think about the models of family behavior in general, traditions and rituals. All of them will appear in the future, already as an integral part of the child's lifestyle.

What can parents do?

  • Give up TV altogether … The child can include cartoons selected by you, downloaded from the Internet in a limited quantity.
  • If point 1 is not for you - set the rules … There should be few of them, they should be specific and understandable, the same for all family members. Restrictions can be by the number of cartoons or by time. For example, you can choose one cartoon that we watch every day before going to bed. Or you can use the timer and watch cartoons until it beeps. Children love these devices. In addition, this technique will help not to personalize the restriction.
  • Expand your baby's horizons. Fill your child's leisure time with a variety of activities, enrich his experience. Introduce the kid to drawing, modeling, designing, build houses, fantasize, read and compose fairy tales, act out fairy tale scenarios, make home performances for grandmothers, play outdoor games, learn songs, walk around the city, discovering new facets of this world. The child learns a lot of new things and learns from personal experience that leisure is not limited to watching cartoons. Of course, we do not always have the energy to maintain this unrestrained activity, but it is worth remembering that this is a contribution to the development of the child, as well as to your relationship in the future.
  • If a child is very interested in a cartoon - do not rush to turn it off, this will cause a violent negative reaction and ruin the relationship. Stop for a moment and share your feelings with your baby. Discuss the plot, find a useful experience in it that can be transferred to life. And then switch the child's attention by offering an interesting game.
