There are many experiments on this topic, and here is one of them. The tendency to notice negativity was investigated using a modified Stroop problem. Participants were presented with a range of positive and negative personality traits in several colors; as each line appeared on the screen, the participants had to name the color as quickly as possible.
Although positive and negative words were not relevant to the color set task, participants were slower to name the color of negative traits than positive ones. This difference in response delays indicates that more emphasis was placed on handling the feature itself when it was negative.
In everyday life, you can spot this thinking error very easily in reviewing bad versus good events.
Bad news sells more articles, and most successful novels are full of negative events and turmoil.
We conclude: negative information usually attracts more attention than positive. And this is constantly used by the media. Have you noticed this? I think yes.
I can teach you how to deal with this mistake of thinking!
