In order to get to know the client as best as possible, we have to listen not only to what he says, but also how he does it, namely to pay attention to the voice of a person, whose features can tell much more than what the words say. Naturally, there is no point in analyzing what is meant by the fact that a person is born with a tenor or baritone. The therapist is only interested in those features of a person's vocal manifestation, which differs from the natural ones given to him by nature.

Surely everyone has heard a voice that can be called stifled, which is evidence that there is most often an unconscious tension of the muscles of the larynx by a person. The very word “choked” can clarify a lot in this situation, as a person whose throat is really squeezed will have a similar voice.

Let me give you an example. At the reception, a thirty-three-year-old man who complains of frequent recurrent attacks of panic attacks. The man speaks in a choked voice, breathing is shallow. Life situation: a man, at the request of his wife, is going to move to another country, at the same time his mother and sister accuse him that he is going to leave them and ask him not to do this, for two years the man worked under the supervision of a person who is bad understands the specifics of the work, but demanded from my client to do the work, as he sees it, which led to the repeated need to redo the work. The man was brought up by an authoritarian father and no less authoritarian mother, after the death of his father, the mother only strengthened his grip, the boy was not allowed to express his needs and desires. The man was sent to receive a prestigious education, which the mother liked, in the third year of university, the first attack of PA occurred, which very much frightened the mother, all kinds of research were carried out, visits to doctors of various fields and a psychologist. The mother insisted on taking antidepressants and refused psychological help, despite the boy's desire to see a psychologist. The history of his life and current life situation testified that his voice was choked, as his throat was "strangled by the hands" of his mother, sister, wife and boss.

Quite different assumptions arise at the sound of a hoarse, harsh voice. Again, you can pay attention to the very name of such a feature of the sound - the word "sit down" has a very interesting meaning and means "to make a lot of effort." Thus, a person with such a voice is trying with all his might to explain something to his counterpart (although perhaps no one objects to him - but he is convinced that there will certainly be objections!).

“The fish opens its mouth, but you can't hear what it is singing” - this is about voices so quiet that those around you are forced to strain their ears in order to hear at least something. At least two options are possible here. One of which indicates that a person is trying to minimize his presence in space, trying to make himself as invisible as possible (quieter than water). The second is evidence of the exact opposite: a person gets special pleasure from the fact that everyone is forced to listen to him.

How can these two options be distinguished? It is necessary to compare what we hear with what we see. It is obvious, for example, that if a person is arrogant, deliberately aristocratic, emphatically distanced, or a person is shockingly dressed, then he most likely belongs to the second type. And if a person constantly "grazes the back", hides in a corner, in no situation can not raise his eyes to the interlocutor - this is about the first option.

There are voices, both in pitch and intonation, that do not correspond to the age of the person to whom it belongs. Let me give you an example. A woman, 45 years old, of a solid build, a teacher at a technical school, complains that she has not been able to build relationships with men. The appearance of a woman corresponds to her age, but when she begins to speak, it seems that an eighteen-year-old girl is sitting inside this adult body, who has not yet mastered her femininity and is trying to pretend and flirt in every way. It is obvious that a woman does not accept her age, in many respects her failures in relationships with the opposite sex are due precisely to this. A woman does not see her responsibility in building relationships. In addition, the woman complained about “cruel and stupid students” who always strive to pin her down. In the performance of professional duties, a woman also behaves irresponsibly, does not understand her teaching function, and is not capable of creating a working atmosphere.

In another case, the owner of a child's voice suffered from sexual dysfunction and had characteristic bodily features, namely, the upper body looked young, almost childish with adequate development of the lower body (it seemed that the child's torso was sitting on a woman's pelvis).

Also informative is both constant coughing (provided that there are no corresponding diseases), and the sudden onset of coughing at some moments of the conversation. These two types of coughs are different.

A cough occurs as a result of irritation of certain parts of the respiratory system. It is easy to guess that in order for such irritation to arise in a healthy person under constant environmental conditions, some internal provoking factor is necessary. And if a certain topic of conversation or a separate word becomes such a factor, then this indicates that this topic or word is not indifferent to a person.

And if this immanent irritating factor is permanently present, and the person seems to be constantly clearing his throat? It can be assumed, that this indicates an excessive effort, as with a harsh voice, but in a less pronounced form, when a person at least sometimes tries to relieve this tension.
