"The one who panics dies a hundred times, not once."

Seneca

Welcome to the world of panic!

I've heard such invitations in horror films. Panic is really like a horror movie.

Imagine that you are alone among many people. Suddenly, as in the camp of a sworn enemy, you feel that your mind is cheating on you, eluding you. The heart is pounding. Your throat tightens and you gasp for air like a fish washed ashore. The head is spinning, as if on the edge of an abyss. Fear rages within you, you want to run away, but you cannot run away from yourself. Fear envelops you, suffocates you, you try to control it, but it is it that controls you. It seems that you are going crazy and dying at the same time. Suddenly, a friendly hand slaps you on the shoulder: "Hello dear, sorry for being late." Like clouds pierced by the sun, panic disappears, leaving a clammy sweat of fear on the skin.

This is how one client described his condition to me. Yes, I myself experienced a similar horror in 2010.

Fear of this enemy will now accompany you like an ominous shadow, and the more you try to drive it away, the more it will haunt you!

This example presents the dramatic reality of people suffering from panic attacks. Who went through this one knows!

Panic attack: the most extreme form of fear

Panic is the most extreme form of fear. The reaction caused by a panic attack sets in motion psychophysiological processes that lead to a feeling of complete loss of control.

When fear reaches its maximum and engages the mind and body in a series of sensations so intense that it blocks and cancels any rational thought. In an instant, such physiological parameters change dramatically: heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, sense of balance.

All of these changes trigger dangerous thoughts and beliefs. For example: "What if I feel bad?" or "What if I die?"

How to recognize them for panic attacks?

Panic symptoms peak within minutes and can be somatic or cognitive:

heartbeat

sweating

tremor

wheezing (shortness of breath) or a feeling of choking

chest pain or discomfort

nausea

abdominal discomfort

dizziness, lightheadedness

derealization (feeling of unreality)

depersonalization (feeling of "detachment" from oneself)

tingling or loss of touch

chills or hot flashes

fear of losing control or “going crazy,” fear of dying.

When panic attacks recur, we are talking about panic disorder.
