"The psychologist does not give advice!" This phrase was not uttered, perhaps, only by the laziest psychologist.
However, clients continue to seek advice from a psychologist. And the psychologist, repeating the already well-known phrase, adds that "the psychologist gives recommendations."
So what is the difference between advice and recommendation?
Explanatory dictionary of the Russian language explains the word advice, as an opinion expressed to someone about what to do, what to do; instruction, indication.
Recommendation (from the Latin recommendatio - a favorable review, advice) is an indication of a certain course of action, instruction.
And what are the differences? And even ten?
Advice
- The advice is given based on the life experience of the counselor.
- Advice can be given on the basis of someone else's experience, as well as based on unverified facts.
- Consequently, the advice is often limited in its functionality, what works for one person is completely inappropriate for another.
- The advice encourages action, often very aggressively. To act in the same way as the advisor did, when he himself, or maybe his friend or relative.
- In the opinion of the person who accepts the advice, the responsibility for the result of the implementation of this advice lies with the one who advised, and if the advice did not help improve the situation, and may even complicate it, then the advisor is solely to blame.
- Often advice is uninvited and intrusive, then this is not even advice, but an opinion that, perhaps, no one asked to express.
- Advice, based on everyday experience, can be completely different and contradictory. You can conduct such an experiment: ask your friends how to get rid of a toothache. I have no doubt that the questioner will receive a lot of advice, they will be different and maybe even bizarre, once a relative in a similar situation advised me to “wash my hands thoroughly and gently wipe each finger with a terry towel with a towel, and the pain will go away”. Perhaps, I really hope for this, among the advice there will be such that it is necessary to urgently consult a doctor, because it is not necessary to get rid of the pain, but from the cause of this pain, and the sooner you apply, the more guarantees you will save your tooth. Looking ahead, this is the only advice, in fact, is a recommendation, tk. it contains a direct indication and is based on qualified assistance.
- The advice is the property of the person who gave it. Advice fosters dependency and insecurity.
- Advice is given by the wisest - the most knowledgeable and most experienced, or who considers himself to be such.
- The one who gives advice cannot know about the true intentions of the person, on what ground the advice will fall, he does not know.
Recommendation
- The recommendation is given by a professional, the psychologist relies on his knowledge, skills, yes, and experience, too, but professional.
- The psychologist recommends only what is suitable for his client, since the psychologist has the opportunity to "bring" a person to the point that he begins to realize his problem and understand it.
- The psychologist knows which recommendation can be general and which can be individual.
- The psychologist's recommendations are not optional; ignoring them delays the process and complicates the client's situation.
- The psychologist helps his client to understand the current situation, helps to take responsibility for its decision on himself, because in his inner mind, in his unconscious part of it, a person has already made a decision and knows the answer to his questions, but something prevents him from doing the first step leading to positive change.
- A recommendation is a response to a client's request, a psychologist provides psychologically competent, adequate information, in other words, relevant, directly related to the client's situation.
- The psychologist is clearly aware of the boundaries of his professional competence, he does not work with what goes beyond it.
- The information from the received recommendation belongs to the client, he can use it at his own discretion, as he sees fit. Knowledge of this information, possession of it gives him freedom.
- The psychologist does not need to be the wisest, it is enough for him to be professional, understanding and accepting, empathic, in other words.
- The professional skills of a psychologist help clients explore their internal beliefs and conflicts, understand existing problems and make changes in their own thoughts, emotions and behavior.

There is often confusion between drawing tests, projective diagnostic techniques, projective therapeutic techniques, and art therapy. Let's see what unites them and what are the differences.
