We all once face the need to choose a profession. And we make this choice, consciously or unconsciously. Today I would like to dwell on internal factors - how does who we are determines our choice?

Who we are, and what we are inside - this is where I usually propose to start looking for ourselves. Some clients come for a consultation with the problem “I don’t know what I like”. And I don't usually believe them. For after an hour of communication, it turns out that a person knows perfectly well what he wants to do. It's just that he either does not realize it, or does not take it seriously, or is under the influence of some other factors. Therefore, initially I "turn" the person to myself.

What is this "to yourself"? These are our …

1. Interests … This is what drives us. What includes us in the activity. What fascinates us. Interests are our fuel, which often helps us learn and spend energy on something new. Interest is our energy. Sometimes clients ask me very curious questions like: “I am interested in business. But my parents sent me there and I followed their example. Could it be that this is not a real interest? " I do not believe this is a "fake" interest. He is real. It's just that our interests are determined by many factors. We are born into a family. We are growing. We have temperament, senses, our innate characteristics. All this influences us and forms our vector of interests.

Try to listen to yourself and feel: where do you get more pleasure? What activities are you most attracted to?

2. Personal qualities … These are some of our behavioral patterns that appear at some point in childhood in order to cope with some of our complexity. Once they are effective and then “settle down” in our character. Personality is a mechanism that helps to adapt to the external environment. To understand personality traits, my favorite thing is to use the Big Five theory - these are five vectors of personality traits, which are divided into poles. For example, it can be extraversion / introversion or closeness / openness to new experiences.

Each job requires certain personal qualities, and personal qualities can be realized only in certain areas. For example, if you are an introvert but want to be a sales manager, you will probably have difficulty in most work situations. Especially where it will be necessary to actively communicate with a large number of people.

To choose a profession, try to understand who you are. How are you different from others?

3. Abilities … This is something that is easy for us to do. We used to think (and they teach us somehow at school) that if you can do math, it means that you should like it. Teachers may say, “This is so easy for her! Let him go to IT!"

Our interests and abilities may not overlap partially or completely. This is not the majority, but about half of the cases that I come across when working with teenagers. In such a situation, you can go either for interests (and at the same time develop your abilities), or for abilities (and try to get interested in the professional sphere).

4. Values … The top rung of our needs, filled with existential meanings. For someone, it is important to make the most money and become more successful, for someone - to leave behind a significant product of his activity (paintings, scientific work, or a piece of music), and for someone - to help other people.

To explore values, I often ask questions: “What would you like to leave behind? What sense do you put into this work?"

5. Lifestyle … This is how you want to live. Important nuances that must also be taken into account. This is rarely talked about, but life style greatly affects our level of happiness.

Think about it: do you want to have a free schedule or a fixed one? Do you want to pay more attention to your family or work now?

I hope this article will help you to make some progress in choosing a profession.

And yes - I invite everyone to the career guidance meetings.;)
