No panic from the spring snowfall!

Drifts of late spring, snowflakes falling on the already green lawns in the light of evening lights … For romantics - an occasion to take beautiful photos against the background of trees bent under the snow, for utilities - work in an emergency mode, for people suffering from depression and vegetative-vascular dystonia - a real threat to experience new panic attack attacks. And the sharply increased number of corresponding calls to psychologists and psychotherapists in recent days is a clear confirmation of this.

What is a "panic attack" is fully known only to those who have experienced this state personally. This is when a minute ago a completely healthy person suddenly begins to think that he is going to die right now. That there are already interruptions in the work of the heart, it is about to stop, because of a spasm of the lungs there is not enough air, intercepts the throat, sometimes hands grow cold and sweat, dizzy, general weakness arises. And I want to shout to everyone around “Help! I'm dying! Farewell!" But everyone around you, both family and friends, as well as bystanders, fellow travelers in public transport or work colleagues, do not seem to notice that you are dying. It seems to them that you are completely healthy and apart from a slight paleness or redness on your face, nothing happens to you. And unbearable, just awful scary! Indeed - scary in a panic! And three thoughts are beating in my head at once:

- Is that all ?! Is this the last thing I see and feel?

- How to survive ?! What to do ?! What medicine will help?

- Why is all this happening to me ?! After all, I didn’t complain about my health a minute ago ?!

After that, the standard whirlwind begins. It seems to him that a dying person is calling the ambulance team. They make him a cardiogram, measure his blood pressure. It turns out that he has no heart problems. A person is given an injection of tranquilizers, he calms down and falls asleep. But, here's the trouble: waking up, he immediately remembers that he almost died recently. After that, the obsessive feeling of dying begins to visit several times a week, and sometimes several times a day. But, what is even more terrible - from now on, a person constantly thinks that he is about to die! This obsessive thought never leaves him for a second. This is the first thing that comes to his mind when he wakes up and the last thing he thinks about when falling asleep. He remembers this when he eats ice cream, watches an interesting movie, communicates with friends, plays with children, and even in the process of intimacy. And, of course, it is no longer possible to live comfortably with such a thought and periodic sensations of dying. Moreover, this is especially true of sleep. It is very difficult for someone who admits the thought that he will no longer wake up to fall asleep. Quite often it is impossible. Hence, chronic insomnia, general weakness, progressive deterioration in the physical and psychological state of a person. Often - up to the impossibility of not only working in a team, but even going out of the house to the street.

What's next? And then a person suffering from the thought of his imminent death finds himself in an incredibly strange position. His relatives and friends simply cannot understand his fear of death and the horrors of regular dying. The maximum they can do is to patiently call an ambulance for him and accompany him on endless trips to the doctors. And this is not at all because they are soulless to their suffering loved one: it's just that all the doctors they turn to cannot find any obvious signs of a person's health disorder! Hence, they all do not understand what to do: after all, a person is healthy!

Doctors are a separate topic for conversation. Those specialists whom a person suffering from panic attacks turns to for the first weeks or months - usually cardiologists, neurologists, therapists, phthisiatricians, ENT specialists and even oncologists - are used to looking for objective, that is, material signs of the disease in their work. But in the case of panic attacks or other manifestations of vegetative-vascular dystonia, detailed blood biochemistry, tests for hormones, Holter and ultrasound studies, cardiogram, tomography of the brain and blood vessels, etc. etc. detects nothing! The patient reporting his dying is not only more likely alive than dead, he is definitely alive and even extremely healthy!

Until a person suffering from panic attacks, agoraphobia (severe meteorological dependence and other manifestations of VSD) reaches the desired address - that is, a qualified psychologist, psychotherapist, psychiatrist, it usually takes many months, or even years. During this time, he will already spend a lot of money on research, doctors and a wide variety of treatments that he usually does not need and which he usually never brings to the end. Because in the brain overloaded with the emotions of fear, new versions are born almost every day, from which it suffers and what it hurts. And the Internet with medical reference books helps the intimidated, suspicious and therefore very suggestible person in this. Disappointed with the doctors, some of whom tell the patient that he “invented the disease for himself and believed in it himself,” while others (quite rightly) send him to a psychiatrist (and the person clearly understands that he is not crazy !!!), but - most importantly - those who do not know how to convey to a person the cause and essence of his very condition, suffering from panic attacks, from despair turns to folk medicine, and then to charlatans who call themselves “magicians”, “energy therapists”, “psychologists-energy specialists”, “psychics "grandmothers", "sorcerers", "healers", etc.

These "healers" standardly explain everything with "evil eye", "damage", "dirty karmas", "life is not according to feng shui", "generic curses." Since this does not need to be backed up by any analyzes and science, suffering people believe in it for some time. Parting during this period with the remaining money and health.

Having been cured of everything in the world, continuing to experience attacks of fatal and uncontrollable panic, having lived in this state for months and years, people gradually adapt and learn to somehow live on. Usually, from an attack to an attack. From autumn to spring. From one stress to another. From one sharp drop in temperature and pressure to another. In tense anticipation of that specialist - psychologist, psychotherapist, psychiatrist, who will be able to understand the problem, will be able to understand the true cause of their condition, will be able to explain to them what is happening to them, will competently prompt how to break the vicious circle of painful endless dying without dying.

Therefore, now, watching both outside my window and on the news programs that a sharp weather leapfrog is observed throughout immense Russia from -10 to +25, we strongly advise all those who suffer from panic attacks themselves, or with compassion watch the torment and insomnia of their loved ones, three things:

- do not turn to people of dubious professions, who promise to "cure" you with magic spells and meditation, persuading you to "just get it out of your head";

- not to be offended by those medical specialists whom they have already visited and whose narrow profile simply does not allow them to thoroughly understand the mental and psycho-physiological processes in the brain of a person suffering from panic attacks, and therefore - to help them;

- seek help immediately from temp psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists who have a high level of knowledge in the subject of depressive states, because panic attacks are not a disease of the heart, lungs, nasopharynx, brain, spine, but only one of the various forms of depressive states. And only an understanding of the true nature of panic attacks, agoraphobia and other acute manifestations of VSD will allow a suffering person to trust an educated specialist, and the latter - to improve the quality of life of the one who turned to him for help.

In general, watching how in May the country falls asleep with romantic white snow, we advise those suffering from VSD not to waste time on charlatans, to be treated by those who can cure, and their loved ones should not think that their husbands, wives, children or parents "We have imagined something for ourselves", and create for them that maximum of positive, without which no recovery is possible. And only in this case, already next winter, the falling snow will delight all family members, and common selfies will be full of smiles. And there will never be any panic from the spring snowfall and sudden changes in temperature and pressure!
