Many men who go to the doctor sexologist say: "Doctor, I am impotent!" In such cases, one has to explain that the term impotence in its traditional-folk understanding is not used in medicine, since it does not carry the necessary information about the actual state of health of a person experiencing sexual dysfunctions.

For example, the US National Institutes of Health considers it necessary to use the more precise term "erectile dysfunction". The modern (tenth) International Classification of Diseases (ICD), which is also used in Russia, contains a section "Sexual dysfunction not caused by an organic disorder or disease."

About half of the sexologist's patients suffer from just such disorders caused by intense excitement, overwork or other psychogenic reasons (for example, neuroses). Another great physician of the medieval East, Avicenna (Abu Ali ibn Sina), who lived a thousand years ago, accurately described the condition that in modern sexology is known as the neurosis of expectation of sexual failure.

Here is a case study illustrating the case of pseudo-impotence

K., 26 years old, a physically strong and healthy person, came to the appointment in complete despair. I learned from his story that he got married a week ago. Over the past four days, he made several attempts to fulfill his marital duty, but due to a weak erection, he did not succeed. With each new unsuccessful attempt, K. felt more and more fear. Behind several years of acquaintance with a girl, her parents, relatives, several months of preparation for the wedding, a magnificent and very expensive wedding, hundreds of guests, congratulations. And now, when all this is over - a disaster?

So what happened? It was possible to find out that he was a shy guy, he had almost no sexual experience. Two days before the wedding, I almost did not sleep, I was busy preparing, buying gifts. At the same time, he drank alcoholic beverages, smoked a lot. I practically did not sleep on the first two days of the wedding. In this state, on the third day, he was left alone with his wife. The result of attempts to intimacy plunged K. into despair and depression. He continued to "try" every day, but to no avail. K. began to think about suicide, as it seemed to him that he could not bear the shame when everyone found out that he was “impotent”. It is not known how this story would have ended if someone had not advised K. to see a doctor.

After a short treatment, everything returned to normal. Accidentally meeting him three years later, I found out that he had two children, relations with his wife are excellent.

The reason for K.'s failures in the first days of family life is overwork, alcohol, smoking, lack of experience of regular sex life, self-doubt. And also the presentation of excessive demands on oneself and an inadequate attitude to the natural physiological reaction of one's body to fatigue and stress. After all, we must remember that a man is not a robot, not a mechanism, his erection does not turn on by pressing a button.

Erection is a complex physiological phenomenon characterized by extreme sensitivity to psycho-traumatic influences

"Misfire" in a man, it can also be caused by the behavior and appearance of a partner, such as dismissive or contemptuous statements about a partner, intonation, gestures, etc. There are often cases when the cause of a man's sexual disorder is the wrong behavior of a woman making jokes about size his genitals or sexual abilities. (in this case, both the size and the ability in such cases, as a rule, are absolutely normal).

The cause of erectile dysfunction in men can also be various diseases of the genitourinary organs (prostatitis, urethritis, etc.), hormonal disorders, organic lesions of the nervous system, mental illness, taking certain medications, circulatory disorders due to vascular diseases, etc.

It must be remembered that hypertension, diabetes, obesity, drug addiction, alcoholism, smoking, chronic stress usually lead to sexual dysfunctions. Therefore, prevention of potency disorders is a healthy lifestyle.

In any case, it is unacceptable to engage in self-diagnosis and self-medication, fall into depression, succumb to panic. Modern medicine is able to effectively solve the problem of most patients. The main thing is to always be optimistic and have a sense of humor.
