Motivation management. The power of motive

Let's look at the main factors of motivation, on which the strength of motive depends:

  1. Significance. To what extent can achieving the goal help me meet the needs that are significant to me?
  2. Achievability. How likely is it that under existing conditions, given my abilities, I will be able to make the necessary efforts and implement my plan?
  3. Reward. How likely is it that the achieved result will lead to a reward?
  4. Satisfaction. How satisfactory is the predicted reward?
  5. Justice. How fair is the projected remuneration to me?

Remember now the motive, the force of which you would like now to clarify for yourself. State it clearly in a positive way, that is, not what you do not want, but what you desire. For example, speak at a conference.

After you have formulated the motive, answer five questions with one number from 1 to 7, where 7 is very strong (completely satisfied), 4 is medium (in principle, enough), 1 is very weak (completely not enough).

For example, the first question: "How much can what I am going to achieve, that is, speak at a conference, help me meet the needs that are significant to me?" We put one number out of seven. And so on for each question.

As a result, you will receive five numbers - this is the profile of your motive in this technique. Now multiply all the numbers to get the total product. For example, 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = 16807.

Qualify your result according to the following conditional scale:

  • if the result is in the range 15043 - 16807 (≈ 90% - 100%) - wonderful.
  • if the result is in the range 11682 - 15042 (≈ 70% - 89%) - Good.
  • if the result is in the range 4959 - 11681 (≈ 30% - 69%) - satisfactorily.
  • if the result is in the range 1598 - 4958 (≈ 10% - 29%) - weakly.
  • if the result is in the range 1 - 1597 (≈ 1% –9%) - very weak.

What range does your result fall within? At the same time, keep in mind that the range corresponding to the rating "excellent" is extremely high motivation, adequate only for extreme conditions. The "satisfactory" range will be sufficient to achieve most goals, provided there are no major or unexpected obstacles. If there are such, then it is better to have motivation at the level of "good" for achieving the goals.

If your motivation is at the “weak” level, then most likely you are acting under the pressure of circumstances and in this case you need to think about why you have to do this? Can you do it differently? Is there anything else you can do? And if necessary, then it makes sense to think about how to increase motivation.

The value for these five variables, their ratio allows you to determine and change the priorities in work on increasing or decreasing motivation.

If we want to increase motivation, then we pay attention to the smallest values - they need to be increased first. For example, in order to increase the value of the variable "reward", it is necessary to think carefully about what benefits (not only material) the achievement of the goal can bring, for the sake of which it is worth achieving it. The more meaningful benefits you find, the greater the value of this variable will be.

After the search for benefits is completed (or if the wording of the motive has changed), be sure to reevaluate all five variables and recalculate the result.
