If suddenly, without a declaration of war and no apparent reason, something in your body aches, becomes inflamed, irritated or stops working - what to do? Before telling what to do with this from the point of view of psychology, I want to remind you:

I. If you know the reason - remove the reason

In other words - as a doctor in a joke recommended to a lady from the new Russians - "The allergy will pass when the pineapples pass." The lady, by the way, was surprised at this: "Strange, can pineapples pass?" Do not be like. It will not be possible to eat pineapples and chew hazel grouses until the allergy finally passes.

II. If you do not know the reason, get tested

When they say that all diseases are from nerves, they forget to clarify that some of these diseases have already gone so far that they have completely objective physical causes. In the presence of organic lesions, drugs are much more effective than psychotherapy. Don't be neglected. Psychological work on oneself never interferes - but it does not replace effective drugs either …

If you have already completed points 1 and 2, you can proceed to the third:

III. What does this symptom want to tell you from a psychological point of view?

If your symptom has no obvious cause, and doctors do not find any changes in your body, then it means that we are talking about psychosomatics. The body is clearly experiencing psychological discomfort, and is trying to tell you something that you have not wanted to hear for a long time … The symptom is almost always the body's cry for help. Talk to him, help him: he is not a stranger to you, your body.

I haven't slept for three nights, I'm tired. I would like to fall asleep, rest …

But as soon as I lay down - a call! - Who's talking? - Rhinoceros.

- What? - Trouble! Trouble! Run here quickly!

- What's the matter? - Save! - Whom? - Hippo!

Our hippopotamus fell into the swamp …

- Failed into the swamp? - Yes! And neither there nor here!

Oh, if you don't come, he will drown, drown in a swamp, The hippopotamus will die, disappear !!!

- Okay! I'm running! I'm running! If I can, I will help!

Ox, this is not an easy job - to drag a hippopotamus out of the swamp!

K. Chukovsky

The symptom will not call you on the phone, so you have to go to him, and not vice versa … It's not an easy job, yes. But at the same time it is also an entertaining journey, a journey into oneself, a conversation with oneself in the language of images: the subconscious has no other language. If you learn to speak with a symptom in its language, you will literally have fabulous discoveries. They will help you even if you know the causes of the symptom and the organic lesions that accompany it. If you do not know any of this, then a conversation with your own symptom acquires special relevance for you.

So, let's dive into a fairy tale!

1. Focus on the symptom

Strengthen it, feel it as fully as possible. How does it feel inside you? What colour is he? Temperatures? Forms? Textures? Imagine it so accurately that you can easily draw it.

2. Become this symptom and portray it as yourself

Move as if you are the symptom; sound like you are the symptom. Listen to your feelings in motion: where is their energy directed? What is the purpose of this magical movement?

3. Notice feelings, images and ideasarising in connection with this movement and this energy.

Let them lead you into a fantasy of rebirth of this energy: reach the goal of your movement, feel the energy of this achievement and where it is directed … and feel its next goal. This fantasy can be as long as you like - let it develop until you feel that the last goal achieved is the final one.

4. Investigate the achieved state

What does it tell you? How do you feel in this state? What would happen if you brought these feelings into your everyday life? Perhaps the symptom reminds you of what you are missing in everyday life? Or perhaps it warns against the fact that there is too much in life?

five. Formulate the message of the symptom

Think of a way to do it succinctly, and write it down.

6. Ask yourself what you have discovered or learned about yourself and your symptom while doing this exercise.

Consider how you could bring the message of the symptom into your daily life.

7. Start changing your life according to the message of the symptom - and when your life changes, the symptom will disappear.

Folk proverbs and sayings can provide some help in dialogue with symptoms:

"It annoys me" - skin diseases: irritation, neurodermatitis

"I can't stand the spirit" - respiratory system: allergic rhinitis, bronchitis, asthma

"My eyes would not see" - vision diseases

"I don't want to hear it" - hearing diseases

"Swallow the offense" - throat diseases: tonsillitis, colds

"I do not digest" - diseases of the digestive system, nausea

If the symptom has just appeared, then by talking to him, you will probably quickly figure out how to change your life in such a way as to satisfy his desires. If you haven't lived without each other for a long time, then perhaps you will have to talk for a long time … but it's worth it. A better understanding of your own body is a huge resource, and should not be neglected.
