Having met her friend the other day, she was discouraged, first by her appearance, and then by the state in which she was. Not so long ago, an energetic young lady with a blush on her cheeks spoke with enthusiasm and inspiration about a new job, about an upcoming project, about prospects and opening horizons. Now in front of me was a girl with a pale face, a dull look, squeezing a smile from her last strength. To my question, how are you? She replied: "It seems that I am not here …" And what happened during these few months that we did not see each other …

In the daily pursuit of beyond achievements, we do not notice how on the way we lose all our strength, including ourselves. Let's talk about a phenomenon that pretty much spoils our life today - burnout syndrome.

Emotional burnout is a depletion that occurs in a person, as a result of sharply overestimated requirements for one's own resources and forces

Emotional burnout is a gradual process that gradually draws you into your networks. When a person makes excessive demands on himself for a long time (and the body's resources are not limitless), psychological and mental overwork occurs, due to which the state of balance is disturbed, there is nothing more to give, and there is no longer any strength to take.

The development of emotional burnout is preceded by a period of increased activity, when a person enthusiastically immerses himself in work, neglecting his needs and desires, completely forgetting about himself or "hammering on himself." After such an emotional upsurge comes - exhaustion, a feeling of fatigue that does not go away even after a night's sleep. People say - I feel "like a squeezed lemon" (there is only one peel left).

To make it more clear how emotional burnout manifests itself, you can refer to the description of the German psychologist Matthias Burisch. He identified four stages:

  1. The first is not quite burnout yet. This is the stage where you need to be careful. It is then that a person is driven by a certain enthusiasm and idealism. He demands too much of himself for a long time.
  2. The second is exhaustion: physical, emotional, bodily weakness (decreased or increased appetite, difficulty falling asleep or restless sleep, feeling fatigued in the morning, decreased concentration of attention, memory, dullness of feelings, heaviness in the body, etc.).
  3. In the third stage, the first defensive reactions usually begin to operate. Intuitively, a person feels that he needs peace, and to a lesser extent maintains social relations. That is, in principle, this is the correct reaction. But just the area where this reaction starts to work is not suitable for this. Rather, a person needs to be calmer about the requirements that are presented to him. But this is precisely what he fails - to get away from requests and claims.
  4. The fourth stage is the amplification of what happens in the third stage, the terminal burnout stage. Burish calls this "disgust syndrome." This is a concept that means that a person no longer carries any joy in himself. Disgust arises in relation to everything.

What to do in order not to "burn out"?

First of all, as they say, "the salvation of drowning people is the work of the drowning people themselves." The realization that I am a person and can afford to be not ideal can significantly reduce not only the severity of emotional burnout, but even prevent its occurrence. Here are some tips on how to do it:

- try to deliberately spend your energy, alternate work and rest;

- do something you like, one that will bring you satisfaction and return joy;

- switch from one activity to another;

- do not strive to be “the coolest” in everything;

- Maintain social connections, meet with friends, colleagues, exchange experiences and share your feelings;

- keep fit. Minimal physical activity will very quickly tone the body, and the brain will be filled with oxygen.

Life is Beautiful. Fill it with interesting things. Treat yourself with respect and love, and burnout is unlikely to overtake you.
