Neurosis Is a generic name. Includes a set of functional disorders that have a psychological cause and are temporary in nature (i.e., these disorders are reversible). The most common form of neurosis is neurasthenia. This disorder manifests itself in increased irritability, mental and physical fatigue.

Symptoms of neurosis are mental and somatic:

Mental:

  • Vulnerability, tearfulness, touchiness, depressive states
  • Experiencing anxiety, fears, panic attacks
  • Irritability
  • Development of phobias
  • General indecision
  • Impaired self-esteem
  • Sensitivity to harsh sounds, bright light, temperature extremes.

Somatic (physical):

  • Pains: headache, heart, abdominal pain
  • Increased fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleep disorders
  • Hypochondria
  • Decreased libido and potency

The most common causes neurosis is internal conflicts, prolonged stress and psychological trauma. We will talk in more detail about internal psychological conflict.

Internal conflict - this is a clash of various personal formations (motives, goals, interests, needs, etc.) According to V. S. For Merlin, an internal conflict is a state of more or less prolonged disintegration of the personality. This is expressed in the exacerbation of contradictions between various sides, properties, relationships and actions of the individual.

For example: I want to buy new clothes, a car, a house, but for this I need to earn money. But, on the other hand, I don’t want to strain to work harder, or to learn something new, or improve my qualifications. Disintegration of the personality begins, because there are contradictions between what I want and not wanting to do what is necessary in order to get what I want.

What are the conditions for a conflict to arise?

Conflict arises when external conditions for satisfying deep needs, motives, human relationships become impossible or threatened. These external conditions can be limited by laws, rules, and guidelines of social life. Or, based on the satisfaction of some needs, other unsatisfied ones arise. For example, I want to eat and at the same time I want to meet the expectations of society - not to leave an important meeting. That. if I choose to satisfy my hunger need, I am left with shame. Or if I satisfy my need to conform, then I stay hungry.

An important condition for psychological conflict is the subjective insolubility of the situation.

In a psychological conflict, the structure of the personality changes, therefore "the development and resolution of the conflict is an acute form of personality development" (VS Merlin).

What to do?

If the cause of the neurosis is internal conflicts:

  1. Realize conflicting needs (Ask the question: What do I want?)
  2. Recognize the right to exist for both needs. All needs have a right to exist, to give everyone the right to speak.
  3. The search for a form and way of expressing a suppressed need.

If the cause of neurosis is stress, overload, exhaustion:

  1. Rest.
  2. Regulation of the regime of work and rest (time management).
  3. Learn to relax and organize your leisure time.
  4. Learn to build a hierarchy of values, paint strategy and tactics.
  5. To deal with the regulation of relations: horizontally: husband, wife, friends; vertically: children, parents, boss, subordinates.

If the cause of the neurosis is psychological trauma:

Go to a therapist and work through your trauma

Often all the reasons are present, or for example: stress and internal conflict. Then we first solve the problem with stress, and then we begin to resolve internal conflicts.

Neurosis is a reversible functional disorder. But if the function of an organ is not restored for a long time, damage to the function will lead to organic changes and often irreversible. Therefore, it is important to take care of yourself, about your psychological state, not to ignore the above symptoms if they last for a long period. Do not translate neurosis into serious organic and mental illnesses, but go to a psychologist or psychotherapist to improve the quality of your life.
