The Internet is replete with headlines "Psychological Services", "Are you depressed? A psychologist will help you "or" We will solve your problems in an hour. " I'm not even talking about the amount of literature on the topic of psychology. It's great that psychology is developing. Psychologists have become less "afraid". But there appeared so-called specialists who, under the guise of a "psychologist", do not help, but worsen the patient's condition, injuring him even more. And these worsened, aggravated conditions have to be resolved by real specialists.

Let's figure it out: where do pseudopsychologists come from?

To become a psychologist in the United States or in European countries, it is necessary, in addition to special higher education, to undergo licensing and certification. The right to practice is regulated by a special commission, which includes mostly representatives of university departments and doctors. To issue a license to a future psychologist, the commission checks knowledge on a professional exam, and also analyzes the candidate's practical experience.

In addition, the education system itself, for example, in England, is also controlled by special services. Visiting commissions check the quality of teaching psychology. Every five years, the commission examines the quality of the research work of the faculty, as well as graduate research. If the commission recognizes the work of the faculty is not high enough, then the license to conduct educational activities at the university may be revoked.

In our country, there is no such verification system either in practice or in the education system.

Of course, Ukrainian legislation contains documents regulating education and psychological activity. But as we know, having a law and keeping a law are two different things. And until a control system is created, chaos reigns in this area. Anyone can call himself a psychologist: a member of a sect, a magician, a sorcerer, someone who woke up in the morning and decided that from that day on he is a psychologist.

How to protect yourself from a pseudopsychologist?

To begin with, you need to find out what education a psychologist has, what university he graduated from, what qualifications he has, whether he has additional education. Usually psychologists write about this on their websites, but it will not be superfluous to ask about it personally. A practicing psychologist is required to have a higher education with an assigned qualification of a psychologist. It's minimum.

The experience of a psychologist is also of great importance. How long has he been in counseling and group work. How he behaves during the conversation: the psychologist should not put pressure on the client, insist on treatment or participation in a group. Any physical impact or violence is unacceptable. The psychologist should not threaten, humiliate, scare the client, he should not suggest that the client's life depends on the passage of therapy. And, even more so, incline to any kind of obscene actions, to criminally punishable acts.

Every professional psychologist is guided by the principles of counseling ethics. The article "Professional ethics of a psychologist" has been written about this in more detail.

Choosing a personal psychologist is really difficult. But if you pay close attention to the personality of a psychologist, his education, ethics and professional experience, then most likely you will not fall into the hands of a charlatan and ignoramus.

Take care of yourself and good luck in your search.
